Artifact of the Week – July 10, 2014

The “Buffalo Inn”, a country cooking and hamburger café, was located on the north side of Oak Street between 8th and 9th streets. The café which was in existence before 1948, when it was owned by Hershall and Annadine Finley who lived in a rock house just east of the café. The Finley’s later rented the café to Johnny Sherrill who barbequed meat in front of the café and it because a popular place for both African American and white customers. Later the café was ran by Lois Stone and members of the community often danced in the café. The photo was taken in April of 1974 when the café was being remodeled into a residence and is part of the Purtle Collection at Old Independence Regional Museum.
