J.A. “Andy” Pate

J.A. “Andy” Pate was born in 1866 in Jamestown, Arkansas.  He got his pilot’s license in 1896 and went to Alaska in 1898.  He served as a boat captain in the Alaskan rivers, the Bering Sea, and the Arctic Ocean for six winters and nine summers.  For four winters he carried the mail by dog sled from Golovin Bay to Council City, Alaska.    This photo is part of the Powell-Guard Collection at Old Independence Regional Museum.
