Exciting Changes for OIRM

Old Independence Regional Museum’s long-range plans focus on growth. We would love to construct a more understandable entrance; a meeting room that, when in use, does not impede the flow of patrons when they are enjoying a tour; an elevator; and a second story with a working kitchen for entertaining and teaching.

Down a short flight of stairs is our work/storage area. This area is air conditioned and heated, yet it contains no insulation or door. Therefore, the heated/cooled air simply filters through to our garage area where HVAC is not necessary. This area is also in dire need of change as it will significantly and positively affect our energy costs.

In the meantime, we have applied for a grant to repair the window frames for many of OIRM’s 1936-era windows. The wood was not properly sealed and is literally falling apart. Many of the windows have collected moisture internally as well as externally, which means the interior windowsills also require maintenance. This grant requires 1:2 funding; we are responsible for 1/3 of the total cost.

Most of these changes will be accomplished over many years using grant funding, but it will be a long timeframe. Many of these grants require matching funds. If you are interested in sponsoring the gift shop reconfiguration, a new office space, our outdoor garden exhibit, storage upgrades, window repair, and/or the Mississippian-era Indigenous Tribes exhibit, please click on the “Donate Now” button above right. We would love to recognize you as one of our primary donors!
