Indigenous Exhibit Update

We are transforming our current Shawneetown exhibit to incorporate more voices, which rightly signifies a lot of labor. Currently we are in the planning stages; we have contacted the Quapaw Nation and they are willing to oversee the changes to ensure the exhibit is NAGPRA compliant. To that end, we have compiled all the artifacts in our inventory pertaining to Indigenous tribes to ensure they can be freely given or loaned to OIRM. If the Quapaw Nation requires repatriation, we will meet that request.

Once the Quapaw Nation has given their approval, we will send similar information to the Osage and Caddo Nations. With all three Nations involved, we believe the exhibit will most reliably tell the stories of their lives within our geographic area 2000 years ago.

Our new interactive exhibit will incorporate archeology as well as Mississippian-era artifacts. We plan on creating short documentaries on past and present archeology practices, new murals, an expanded presentation area, the incorporation of Mississippian-era pottery and tools, and new seating.
